Start with the property
A California home can work. The details matter.
Valais Blacknose sheep are known for their Swiss Alpine origin, distinctive black markings, and heavy fleece. California ownership calls for a local plan rather than a copy of an Alpine one. Shade, clean water, airflow, dry resting areas, secure fencing, routine hoof attention, and a relationship with a livestock veterinarian all matter.
Coastal Monterey County differs from the Central Valley, foothills, and Southern California. Before choosing an animal, buyers should discuss their microclimate, acreage, shelter, flock companions, predator pressure, and transport plan with the ranch they are speaking to and with their own animal-care professionals.

The Monterey program
This is the flock we live with every day.
Our fourteen sheep share the ranch with the rest of the Monterey Mini Cow Company animals. The flock includes foundation ewes, MegaMan (VBSS#006526), Murci (VBSS#006530), younger sheep we are raising for the future, and clearly identified wethers. A few transfers are still pending, and we say so.
Availability starts with a conversation because every animal and every home is different. MegaMan's 2026 collection is complete, and breeding programs can request straws at $700 each. When you contact us, the conversation stays focused on our sheep.

Yes, with management suited to the property and local conditions. California owners should plan for shade, reliable water, ventilation, hoof care, parasite management, appropriate fencing, and veterinary support rather than assuming an Alpine breed needs only cold weather.

What should I ask a California Valais Blacknose breeder?
Ask about the animal's identity, age, sex, registry status, health and scrapie documentation, current photos or video, temperament, purpose, transport timing, and what support is available after placement. Pending paperwork should be called pending.
Are Valais Blacknose sheep pets or breeding livestock?
They can fill different roles, and that role should be clear before placement. Monterey Valais currently offers two non-breeding companion wethers and MegaMan semen straws while retaining the breeding nucleus. Housing, records, care, and placement expectations are discussed according to the specific offering.
